Tips for Choosing the Right Breast Form

Because every woman and every cancer journey is different, we offer a diverse array of versatile breast forms to meet your specific needs after breast surgery or a mastectomy.

Breast replacement forms

When it comes to breast replacement forms, you have options. What you choose is highly dependent on where you are in your recovery, what kind of surgery you had, and personal preference. We've put together a guide to help you choose.

Types of Breast Forms

Featherweight Forms

Ideal for post-surgery recovery or a peaceful night's sleep, this versatile form is filled with fiberfill, allowing for customizable adjustments to ensure the perfect fit. Simply remove some fiberfill to achieve your desired size and comfort level.

Foam Forms

Occasionally chosen for their lightweight design and cost-effectiveness, these options are perfect for achieving a balanced silhouette following a lumpectomy or reconstructive surgery.

Silicone Forms

Crafted to mimic the feel of natural breast tissue, these silicone forms conform seamlessly to the chest wall, ensuring a snug and secure fit, even on uneven or concave surgical sites. Available with or without nipples, and in various skin tone shades, they offer versatility and comfort for every individual.

Weighted & Unweighted Forms

Weighted breast forms are advisable for individuals who have undergone unilateral surgery to help maintain balance and prevent potential posture issues that may lead to back pain. It's important to wait until the surgical site has healed before using weighted forms, as they provide additional support. Silicone forms are typically considered weighted.

On the other hand, unweighted breast forms are more suitable for individuals who have had surgery on both breasts. With unweighted forms, you have the flexibility to select any size based on your desired post surgery breast size. Foam forms are available in both weighted and unweighted options, providing versatility in choice.

Types of Backs

A flat-back provides more fill-in when more tissue has been removed.

A built-up back is for extensive surgeries where a larger amount of tissue has been removed.

A contoured or hollow-back, as seen in the picture to the right, is the best choice if less tissue has been removed.

Breast Form Shapes

Selecting the right breast form starts with choosing your preferred breast shape: triangle, asymmetrical, or teardrop. Each of these shapes are available in either foam or silicone breast forms.

The asymmetrical shape of these forms extends further on one side to compensate for any lost tissue, while also providing additional coverage higher up on the top. When ordering asymmetrical forms, it's essential to specify whether you need a left- or right-sided form.

Teardrop breast forms look like their name, providing more tissue on the bottom than the top. Teardrop forms can be worn on either side.

Triangle shape is the most popular shape. They fill in tissue on both sides and on top.

Breast Forms by Surgery Type

Choosing the right breast form can seem very complicated and overwhelming. We break down breast forms by surgery type to help bring calm to the chaos.

Right after surgery – A lightweight or featherweight form is recommended.

Single side surgery – Wear a weighted form to balance the weight of your remaining breast.

Double side surgery – Wear an unweighted foam form or adjustable fiber-filled form.

Partial mastectomy, lumpectomy or reconstruction – Choose either a foam or silicone hollow-back form. Note that hollow back forms should not be used after a full mastectomy.

Full mastectomy – A form with a flat back or built-up back is recommended to fill in when tissue has been removed.
